Frequently Asked Questions: Editing
Do I need editing?
Yes, of course! Professional editing is an investment in the success of your story, your credibility as an author, and the loyalty of your readers. Even editors need their writing to be edited.
What kind of editing do I need?
There are four types of editing: proofreading, copy editing, line editing, and developmental editing. Here is a good explanation of the differences between them.
Am I ready for editing?
If you’ve written, revised, and edited your writing to the best of your personal abilities, you’re ready to send it along to an editor!
How much will it cost?
According to Writer’s Market, professional copy editing typically costs anywhere from $2000 to $5500 per project. My editing projects typically begin at $2000 (for the average novel length of 80,000 words) at the price of $0.025 per word.
How long will it take?
My turnaround time is typically four weeks. For shorter or longer projects, a two- or six-week editing session may be more appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions: Payment
How do you accept payment?
I invoice my clients via AND CO, which accepts PayPal payments as well as major credit cards.
When are payments due?
Within 5 business days of receipt. A $50 late fee will be applied to all past due invoices for every week they go unpaid.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes! I am more than happy to work out a payment plan that will work for both of us.
Frequently Asked Questions: Process
How should I send my writing to you?
In a Microsoft Office Word document via email.
How do you make changes?
I use Microsoft Office Word’s Track Changes feature.
Which style guide do you follow?
I use the Chicago Manual of Style.
What if I need to reschedule?
Contact me ASAP. Rescheduling may be possible if my calendar allows for it, but it will otherwise likely result in cancellation.
What if I need to cancel?
Contact me ASAP. Understand I will retain the nonrefundable deposit and any money I will have already earned for the portion of the
project edited before the cancellation request.
How often should I expect to hear from you?
I’ll be in touch with you at the halfway point of our editing session and again, of course, when I return your polished manuscript. Unless I have an urgent question, however, you won’t hear much from me, as I will be deeply engrossed in your book!
She caught things I hadn’t even thought of!
Mikaela is prompt and professional with reasonably-priced services. She turns around projects faster than most editors and has a great eye for detail and consistency. Thanks to her editing and advice, my books read well and have an edge of realism. I am so glad I found her!John Grover
