Frequently Asked Questions: Editing
Do I need editing?
Yes, of course! Professional editing is an investment in the success of your story, your credibility as an author, and the loyalty of your readers. Even editors need their writing to be edited.
What kind of editing do I need?
There are four types of editing: proofreading, copy editing, line editing, and developmental editing. Here is a good explanation of the differences between them.
Am I ready for editing?
If you’ve written, revised, and edited your writing to the best of your personal abilities, you’re ready to send it along to an editor!
How much will it cost?
According to Writer’s Market, professional copy editing typically costs anywhere from $2000 to $5500 per project. For the average novel, I charge anywhere from $800 to $1600. I determine the exact price after a sample edit.
How long will it take?
My turnaround time is four weeks for manuscripts up to 100,000 words.
Frequently Asked Questions: Payment
How do you accept payment?
I invoice my clients via PayPal (or Square for recurring invoices).
When are payments due?
Within 3 business days of receipt. A $25 late fee will be applied to all past due invoices.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes! I offer three options: 1) pay in full upon booking, 2) pay 25% nonrefundable deposit upon booking + remaining 75% at the start of the editing session, or 3) pay 25% nonrefundable deposit upon booking + 50% at the start of the editing session + remaining 25% at the halfway point of the editing session.
Frequently Asked Questions: Process
How should I send my writing to you?
In a Microsoft Office Word document via email.
How do you make changes?
I use Microsoft Office Word’s Track Changes feature.
Do you follow a style guide?
My English education is largely based on the Chicago Manual of Style, but because I work with authors from all over the world, I focus on consistency and clarity within the existing style of a given manuscript, rather than converting it.
What if I need to reschedule?
Contact me ASAP. Rescheduling may be possible if my calendar allows for it, but it will otherwise likely result in cancellation.
What if I need to cancel?
Contact me ASAP. Understand I will retain the nonrefundable deposit and any money I will have already earned for the portion of the
project edited before the cancellation request.
How often should I expect to hear from you?
Unless I have an urgent question, you won’t hear much from me during the actual editing process, as I will be engrossed in your book!
Will you send me reminders?
Yes! I will send a reminder 2 business days before the start date of the editing session, as well as any necessary payment reminders.
She caught things I hadn’t even thought of!
Mikaela is prompt and professional with reasonably-priced services. She turns around projects faster than most editors and has a great eye for detail and consistency. Thanks to her editing and advice, my books read well and have an edge of realism. I am so glad I found her!John Grover
